School St. 9 & 10

It's been a busy weekend. Two more School St. Strips. This one — "Phone Number" — is Martin's favorite. I like it too.

In fact, I like both of these. They're simple, both in their language and in the drawing, and I think that tends to work really well.

I'm also getting more comfortable drawing kids. I was worried about it at first, but now I'm starting to like it. There's a lot of freedom to play with proportions and create funny characters because the proportions of children are so crazy to begin with. Those giant heads!

School St. 7 & 8

Been super swamped lately. Also been working exclusively on pencils, which has been nice but has resulted in a decided lack of finished work. One of the nice things about having client work is the accountability. At some point I have to get some things done.

So this weekend I hammered out some new School St. strips. I was shocked at how rusty I felt after only a couple of weeks.

But, you know, you power through. The only way to get un-rusty is to work.

School St. 5 & 6

Here are some more School St. strips. These are so fun to make.

One bonus of this process is that I feel it's making me a better cartoonist. I really have to think hard about how to make these work, and I think I'm getting just the tiniest bit better at it with each strip.

Gaining a better understanding of storytelling — what makes a comic funny or what gives it impact in some way — is invaluable knowledge to me.
